The 13 Flaws of Atheism, Part 1

#1 Atheism isn’t a belief, but the lack of a belief

This is what I call the “single definition” of atheism.  It is the cornerstone of most atheistic defenses.  Atheists like to use this definition because they feel that it protects them from certain criticisms from Christians and other theists.  For example, if atheism is a lack of a belief, then atheists can’t be criticized for believing anything.  This simple idea is a powerful weapon for atheists on message boards.  It is, however, wrong.  Since there is (currently) no scientifically verifiable evidence to support either side of the God question, both theism and atheism have to be called beliefs.  Just as theism is a belief that there is a God, atheism is the belief that there isn’t.  Atheism, therefore, is not immune to the criticisms that other belief systems might draw.

As an atheist (formerly known as Christian), I am comfortable in saying, "I do not believe God exists." It is a belief or a scientific theory based on the lack of evidence for a God. Because negatives can not be proved, it is ignorant to say, "There is no God." It is untestable by human means presently.

I guess I just wouldn't classify all views of atheism as people who say it is merely unbelief. What unbelief means is an unbelief in any known representation of God. Many people express a complete lack of belief in God because of this principle.

I think some view life itself, from the stars, moon, sun, oxygen, trees, etc as a representation of God. You right though, there is no scientific test we can apply to conclude there is a God. But science itself offers little to explain how life got here. It seems both sides require faith to except that either life itself was by accident or by a Creator.
